This year, the Brazos Valley Council of Governments is designated as the lead agency for the 2012 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The VITA sites have been community-based since 2008, and the purpose of these sites is to help low- to moderate-income families have their taxes prepared for free. The families use the money saved to pay bills or add to savings. This free service has grown each year with the assistance of staff and volunteers. Many families visiting the VITA sites also receive as part of their refund the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable tax credit available to individuals and families earning below a certain income level per year.
Offering this free service requires volunteers… lots of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to prepare taxes, serve as greeters, and provide site support. Training for all volunteer positions is provided by the Brazos Valley Council of Governments and the IRS. Volunteers receive ongoing support from qualified staff and experienced managers who review all tax returns and are available to answer questions. Volunteers are needed in the following counties: Brazos, Madison, Grimes and Washington.
There is no liability to volunteers preparing income tax returns free of charge. Call soon to volunteer Log on to the Volunteer Center of Brazos Valley at www.volunteerbrazosvalley.org and sign up to be a VITA volunteer. We need you to make this help available.
